The 3 Year Evolution of the Porsche Taycan

When it arrived in 2020, the Porsche Taycan was one of the best performing EVs on the market. Has it kept up to its rivals?

Porsche
jumped into the electric vehicle game in 2020 with the Taycan. From the get-go, the electric sports car lived up to its automaker’s reputation for performance and styling, and each year, Porsche adapted it to the quickly evolving luxury EV market.
The Taycan isn’t perfect. Its battery ranges, for example, have lagged behind competitors. But few EVs can match its performance on the road, and each model year’s improvements maintain its position as a strong contender for eco-conscious thrill-seekers.

Year-over-year changes to the Porsche Taycan

When it came on the scene in 2020, the Porsche Taycan was already impressive. The first EV with a two-speed transmission, it could consistently accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.4 seconds.
It also outdid its primary rival, the Tesla Model S, in charging times, juicing up from 5% to 80% in less than 25 minutes when plugged into a fast charger.
But one major critique was its pricing—the base model 4S cost more than $105,000. Porsche improved that the following year by adding a lower trim level buyers could get for just over $81,000. Porsche also improved the charging system, head-up display, and software updates.
In 2022, Taycan trim levels went in a different direction. Porsche introduced the finely tuned GTS sports model.

The Porsche Taycan’s battery range has changed too

In many cases, EVs have struggled to live up to their
EPA-rated
ranges. With the Porsche Taycan, it’s been the opposite.
While the Environmental Protection Agency claimed the car’s range reached a lackluster 192 miles, a real-world test from
Edmunds
revealed an impressive 323 miles, far closer to Tesla’s industry-leading numbers at the time.
The EPA hasn’t tested the Taycan since, but improvements made to the battery’s temperature controls and energy efficiency have probably increased the car’s initial numbers. AMCI Testing, a third-party auto testing firm put the Taycan’s range at 282 miles.
