The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV is expensive as far as PHEV SUVs are concerned. With a starting price of $59,495 for the entry-level PHEV, you could almost afford two

But — and this is a really big but — you’d be sacrificing every bit of the off-road capability you get with the Jeep brand. For many, that’s too big a sacrifice to make.

Performance and fuel economy

Many midsize PHEV SUVs beat the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe PHEV where fuel economy is concerned, but that’s not to say the Grand Cherokee doesn’t still outperform its internal combustion engine counterparts—by a lot. The Grand Cherokee 4xe’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 17.3 kWh battery pack achieves 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque for maximum on-road pep and off-road grunt. 
The Grand Cherokee PHEV’s battery takes about 3 hours to fully charge with a Level 2 setup or 12 hours on a standard household current. A full charge gets you about 25 miles of all-electric range before waking the traditional gas engine.

The limited warranty covers any problems caused by manufacturer defects or failures. The powertrain warranty covers your engine, transmission, and front- or all-wheel-drive components. And the battery warranty covers the 4xe’s expensive high voltage lithium-ion battery.

Trim levels and options

In addition to the tech features outlined above, the entry-level 4xe trim gets you:

There is no shortage of PHEV SUVs to choose from, but when it comes to midsize cars with the trail capabilities of a Jeep, your options are a bit more sparse. One of them is the

But what about off-road capabilities? The RAV4 Prime has them — but not nearly to the extent of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. 
Where the Grand Cherokee 4xe is ready to join a rock crawling club, the RAV4 Prime could only drive you there to watch.
