If it sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is—the Ioniq is sadly let down by a feeble powertrain, tight second row, and driving that’s a little rough around the edges.

The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid mostly succeeds at offering a cheap, cheerful, and comfortable ride about town. Promising 52 miles per gallon, you’ll see numbers just as low as that of a hybrid Corolla at the fuel pump. The four-door compact hatchback design balances seating and storage space almost perfectly, while a wealth of connectivity options entertain everyone up front. You can even jumpstart the starter battery using the hybrid power bank at the touch of a button.
As bright as the Ioniq shines in some areas, it’s tarnished in others. The automatic shifter doesn’t do a great job at juggling the gas and electric powertrains during acceleration, let down by a combined 139-horsepower. Since the battery is so heavy, the stiff suspension spanks you with every bump in the road. And adult passengers might find it hard to enter and exit the snug second row—to say nothing of tolerating a long ride!

  • Smart Sense driver-assistance software, including adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane-keeping assistance, driver-attention monitoring, and forward-collision avoidance with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection
Today’s PHEVs include a ton of neat technology. On the central display, you’ll see information like battery level, remaining range, and how much power is flowing between the two powertrains. Using the paddles on the steering wheel, you can control the amount of regenerative braking and top up the battery as you see fit. Set up the programmable charging schedule and the car will draw power during off-peak hours only.

Performance and fuel economy

When it comes to a hybrid, the most important question is, “Does it save gas?”
Don’t get us wrong: the Ioniq Plug-in’s EPA ratings of 52 combined mpg and 119 mpge are competitive. But if its 60-horsepower electric motor didn’t struggle to deliver (requiring the gas engine to make up the difference), its fuel economy would be a lot better. It also might improve the all-electric driving range of 29 miles
Still, when it comes to the highway, the Ioniq drives as smoothly as smooth can be. Once you’ve worn out the battery, it’ll take 2 hours and 20 minutes to recharge at a Level 2 charging station.

Trims and prices

The Ioniq PHEV SE ($27,495) provides a solid foundation, but with zero packages or significant options, you have no choice but to upgrade to the next trim for any extras. The next level, SEL ($30,495), adds LED headlights, a 7-inch LCD instrument panel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-adjustable driver seating, and a wireless charging pad. Its most valuable feature, however, is the blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert system.
The Limited ($33,945) trim expands the touchscreen to 10.25 inches and provides a sunroof, power-folding mirrors, driver's seat memory settings, and leather upholstery. As for technology,  an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system adds entertainment, while the front and rear parking sensors and enhanced lane-keeping system provide function.

Exterior and interior

At first glance, the 2020 Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid looks like a sleek and zippy sedan. Sure, it has the same abstracted front grille as every other EV—we get it, car makers, electric power is the future—but in a boxy, more conventional face. Unlike the Insightor the Kona, it’s not trying to stand out. Complimenting the simple silhouette is a paint palette of Stellar Silver, Ceramic White, Intense Blue, Scarlet Red Pearl, Black Noir Pearl, Summit Gray, or Amazon Gray.
Inside, the Gray or Charcoal Black interior features sustainably sourced composite materials made of sugar cane, recycled plastic, powdered wood, and volcanic rock. Compared to the non-hybrid version, it has four cubic-feet less storage space, bringing the total to 23. The interior might be uninspired, but it did earn a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).


Again, Hyundai has gone all out. Since hybrid battery replacements are notoriously expensive, the Ioniq Plug-in includes a lifetime battery warranty for the original owner. Not only is this a hell of a deal, but it also helps your car to pay for itself over an extended lifetime.
Hyundai’s other warranties also come highly recommended. You’re covered if a failed part falls under the year/mileage limit of the following categories:

  • Free factory-scheduled maintenance: Three years/36,000 miles
