Why do electric cars accelerate faster?

A friend of ours owns a Renovo Coupe and let me get behind the wheel last weekend. And let me tell you, that thing_ fast_! I am shook. How come electric cars can accelerate faster than ones powered by gas?

Congrats on driving one of the fastest and most legendary
electric cars
! Hold on a minute while I geek out…OK, I’m back.
You’re quite right! Contrary to popular belief,** EVs are not slow by any means**. While they’ll never be as fast as top supercars on the track, they still** accelerate from 0 to 60 mph at an impressive rate**. Here’s why electric cars are faster than gas-powered cars:
  • Pressing the throttle generates torque instantly (this is what propels the vehicle forward). Gas-powered cars need to check certain boxes as far as engine requirements before they’re able to reach top speeds. Typically this is around** 4,000 rotations per minute (RPMs)**. Hence, all the_ vroom vrooming _we’ve all witnessed before a race.
  • Absence of a transmission. Because EVs don’t have a transmission, there’s** no need to worry about starting in the lowest gear**. Even the most advanced sports cars have slight pauses between gear shifts.
  • Simple design. Electric cars are designed with efficiency in mind. The main source of energy is stored in the battery and when the driver pushes down on the gas, the **energy is sent to the motor through an electric current. **
  • No brake fade. Gas guzzlers have to rely on their mechanical brakes. However brake fade is less likely in an EV since you can regenerate energy when braking (which sends it back to the battery).
Now that electric vehicles have sparked your interest, you may be considering the many benefits of owning one. The $7,500 federal
EV tax credit
may be enough incentive right there.
