Who qualifies for farm and ranch insurance?

Do I qualify for a farm and ranch policy? I just bought a little property upstate that has a few acres of old farmland and a pond. I may try my hand at growing some fruits and vegetables, but only for my personal garden. I don't plan on having any farm animals, either. Would I need a farm policy since the land used to be a farm?

“Farmland with a pond and a small garden sounds lovely! Since you don’t plan on operating the land as a working farm, a standard homeowner’s policy will still fit your needs.
A farm and ranch policy is similar to a standard homeowner policy with the same coverage on dwellings and personal property. Where it differs is coverage for equipment that one requires for traditional farming.
A farm and ranch policy will provide additional coverage for the following:
  • Farm machinery
  • Grain
  • Livestock
  • Farm tools
  • Farm buildings or structures (barns)
  • Additional liability protection
It may surprise you to know that many traditional insurance companies like
State Farm
also sell farm and ranch policies. So if you ever decide to turn your personal garden into a fully functional farm, give them a call!
