How do you open a Jeep’s gas tank if the button is stuck?

My Jeep Grand Cherokee’s fuel filler door release button has stopped working and I can’t figure out how to get the fuel door open to refuel—how do you open a Jeep’s gas tank if the button is stuck?

Sorry to hear you’re experiencing this issue! If the button or switch that opens your Jeep’s fuel filler door is stuck or malfunctioning, you can still access the gas tank by using the manual emergency fuel filler door release. All you have to do is:
  1. Open your Jeep’s liftgate.
  2. Push down on the inboard edge of the left storage bin—doing this will cause the outboard edge to pop up.
  3. Grab the popped-up outer edge to disengage the snaps holding it in place.
  4. Remove the storage bin entirely.
  5. Find and pull the looped release cable.
After pulling the release cable, your Jeep’s fuel filler door should pop open and you’ll be able to refuel as you normally would.
If you don’t have experience working with electronics, we’d suggest bringing your Jeep to a mechanic to find out why the fuel filler door release button has stopped working. It could be that you’re dealing with a bad connection, bad wiring, or worn down hardware, in which case the button itself may need to be replaced.
In some cases, however, a simple fuse replacement is all that’s needed. Depending on your exact make and model, the fuel filler door release button may be connected to the same fuse that controls your vehicle’s TPM system—check your owner’s manual for the fuse diagram and verify that the fuse hasn’t blown.
