When can you cancel renters insurance?
I got a new job that requires me to move out of state. I’m thrilled about the job, but my current renters insurance does not cover my new state. It’s still good for another six months, but I have to move sooner than that. Can I cancel my renters insurance before it’s up?

The short answer is yes, you can cancel your renters insurance at any time. If your current provider’s coverage is no longer working for you, you are in the clear to find a new policy that suits your needs. Here’s how:
- Check in with your current landlord. Make sure that your landlord does not require renters insurance as a part of your lease agreement. If that’s the case, canceling your renters insurance could result in a breach of lease—which nobody wants.
- Contact your insurance company. Doesn’t matter how, but just make sure you’ve given them a heads-up that you’re canceling. Most insurance companies allow you to do this online or via email.
- Follow your provider’s steps. Once you notify them of your cancellation, some carriers will send you some forms to fill out or ask for a written request. These can usually be done online as well.
- Pay any outstanding fees. Make sure you’re all in the clear before cutting off ties. Some renters insurance providers may even require a cancellation fee, just FYI, and you’ll have to pay off any premiums,
- Update your new contact info. Give your old renters insurance agency your updated address in case they have any outstanding forms to send you.
If you paid for your renters insurance policy ahead of time, cancellation before your policy is up will also result in a refund check.
