What’s the best year for a used Toyota Sequoia?
I’m looking at buying a used Toyota Sequoia. My Ford Expedition isn’t comfortable on back roads during our constant camping trips from Spring through Fall, and I like the look of the Toyota more too. But what’s the best year for a used Toyota Sequoia, though?

Toyota Sequoia
we’d suggest avoiding the 2001 to 2007 models, but any model from 2008 and beyond should be great. Just note they’ll feel a little dated if they’re from 2019 or earlier, given their lack of features.The Toyota Sequoia has only had three generations since the 2001 model year. The first generation (2001 to 2007) had a few kinks that needed working out, especially early on, leading to higher volumes of NHTSA complaints for the 2001, 2002, and 2003 models.
None of these were particularly bad, though—the 2002 model had 680 complaints, well below the four-figure numbers some of the Sequoia’s competitors have seen.
The second generation Toyota Sequoia ran from 2008 to 2022. These SUVs were well-built, but garnered lackluster reviews largely because the platform went so long without a major revision. The Sequoia didn’t get Android Auto and Apple Carplay until 2020, so many car reviewers criticized the SUV for feeling dated compared to its rivals.
From September of 2022 on, the Sequoia is now in its third generation. But if you’re buying a used Sequoia, you’re looking at those older models. And in that case, the winner is clear: The best year for a used Toyota Sequoia is the 2021 model, if only because it’ll be a little cheaper than the 2022 model and will be similarly equipped.
