Where is the 1995 Toyota Corolla OBD port location?

I’m a relatively new driver, and I inherited a 1995 Toyota Corolla. I’m determined to make it last for as long as possible, but my check engine light recently came on and I’m not sure how to scan the diagnostic code for this car. Where is the OBD port located?

Good for you for being proactive about your car’s check engine light! For the 1995
Toyota Corolla
—and all Corollas between 1995 and 2002—the OBD port location is under the hood. Once your hood is open, look for a small flap that says “diagnosis,” then open the plastic cover—this should reveal the OBD port so you can figure out what the issue is!
For the 1995 Corolla, the OBD port is a non-standard 22-in OBD-I, which is different from modern OBD-II ports. OBD-II scanners work on all cars with OBD-II ports, but OBD-I ports were generally specific to the vehicle—unfortunately, an OBD-II scanner won’t work on your ‘95 Corolla. Certain scanners, like some Innova readers, will read OBD-I codes, but if you have an OBD-II scanner, you’ll need to pick up an adapter at an auto parts store.
You may be able to get around this if you have a paperclip handy, though it could be a risky and disappointing experiment. All you have to do is:
  • Form the paperclip to fit your diagnosis box
  • Make sure your ignition is off, then attach both paperclip ends to the test terminals
  • When secure, turn your car ON without starting the engine.
This may reveal the diagnostic
OBD code
for your issue—but that’s no guarantee!
