What are car companies doing to stop texting and driving?

I’ve read that texting and driving is one of the leading causes of accidents in the United States. While states are cracking down with tickets and fines, what are car companies doing to curb the incidence of texting and driving?

While car companies are primarily in the business of making money, the automotive industry is doing many things to combat texting and driving.
Here are some major manufacturers and the technologies they’re creating to curb the
distracted driving
epidemic:
  • Ford’s Sync system allows drivers to dictate and send texts, as well as have the system read incoming texts. In addition, Ford has the MyKey system, which allows parents to block incoming calls and texts when their child is driving.
  • Volvo has implemented an in-camera system that looks at the driver’s expressions and the direction of their pupils. If the system detects that the driver isn’t paying attention, an alert is sent to the dashboard.
  • Subaru now has DriverFocus technology on their vehicles. This uses facial recognition software to determine if the driver is losing focus or drowsy. It then sends visual and aural cues to the driver to alert them of their behavior.
However, these systems are intended as supplemental ways to stop texting and driving. The real hindrance to safe driving is the driver themselves. As a result, tell your teens about the dangers of distracted driving and set a good example by never texting and driving yourself.
Although car insurance can’t prevent texting and driving, it can protect you from other motorists who choose to engage in risky behavior. But you should never overpay for it. That’s when the
