How long does the driving test take in Texas?

I just made my appointment for my driving test, but I will need to miss work to take it. How long should I expect the test to last?

On average, Texas road tests last around 20 minutes. While it could take longer, you shouldn’t expect it to exceed a half hour.
If you haven’t yet scheduled a drive test, you can do so
online
through the Texas Department of Public Safety.
To avoid delays, ensure you have everything to
prepare for a driving test
before arriving. Here’s what you’ll need to bring to your appointment:
  1. The
    driving test fee
or the payment receipt if you have already paid for the test
  2. Certificate of completion for meeting the
    ITD requirements
  3. If you are under 25, proof of driver education: Texas Driver Education Certificate (DE-964) from a certified driving school, Texas Driver Education Certificate (DE-964E) from a public high school, Parent Taught Driver Education Certificate (PTDE-964), OR Adult Driver Education Certificate (ADE-1317).
  4. Proof of current
    liability insurance
for the vehicle to be used for the road test (the applicant must be listed as a named driver on the policy)
  5. A vehicle for the road test that meets all of these requirements: Current registration sticker, two license plates—one plate on both the front and rear bumpers, no unusual mechanical issues, AND All of the vehicle safety requirements described in
How to Prepare for a Drive Test
Setting aside at least a couple of hours on your test day is best. When it comes to the test itself, you may be asked to do the following:
  • Turn using the proper turn signals
  • Switch lanes
  • Make a U-turn
Although these maneuvers can seem overwhelming for a young driver, you have nothing to worry about. As long as you remain calm and prepare in advance, you will do just fine.
