- Let the vehicle sit until the engine is cold.
- Prop open the hood.
- Look for a plastic or metal reservoir labeled power steering fluid or steering. It is usually on the passenger side closer to the windshield, but the location can vary based on the year of your vehicle.
Once you locate the reservoir, you should make sure the fluid level is between the indicated upper and lower level marks and add fluid as needed. Typically, the reservoir is translucent, but if it’s too opaque to see through, you should clean it off or unscrew the cap to check the level.
In general, you should replace the power steering fluid every 50,000 miles or as directed in the owner’s manual. If you aren’t sure the last time the fluid was replaced, ask your mechanic to take a look.
