How long does it take to get a car registered?

I just moved here from Washington and I want to get my vehicle’s paperwork sorted out before I start driving around a lot. How long will it take me to register my car?

“California is a beautiful state!
Fortunately, getting your car registered should only take a day.
To
register
your vehicle in the Golden State, you’ll need to submit:
  • An application for title or registration (found on the DMV website as FORM REG 343)
  • Your Washington car title and registration
  • Proof of insurance
  • A current smog certificate
  • Payment for DMV fees
Keep in mind that once you have a permanent address, the DMV requires you to register your vehicle within 20 days.
To complete the process, a DMV employee will do a VIN check on your vehicle. Then, you will be issued California license plates, as well as your registration sticker and registration card.
Your big move might also call for updating your car insurance policy. The
Jerry
app can help you find great rates on great coverage. Jerry will generate quotes from over 50 of the nation’s leading providers in seconds.
Enjoy living in sunny California!”
