How do I rent a car without car insurance?

I'm taking my partner on vacation in California next month. Neither of us drive, so we don't have an active insurance policy. How do I rent a car without insurance?

Great question! Rental car companies will already have the state-required minimum
car insurance
coverages on every vehicle in their fleet, but you may want to consider extra coverage if that state minimum isn’t going to be enough.
Most state minimums are not enough to cover damages or injury you cause others in a major accident. The
liability coverage
that comes with the rental does not cover damage to the car itself, meaning if you total it you will have to pay for the damages out of pocket.
Typically, people with an insurance policy will be covered if they drive a rental car. Since you and your partner don’t have an active policy, it’s probably best to purchase supplemental insurance coverage from the rental company.
You may also have collision coverage included in a travel package that you’ve purchased with your credit card. Call your credit card company or speak to your travel agent for more info.
