“It’s great that your daughter’s getting out on the road! But understandably, there are a lot of costs and anxieties associated with insuring first-time drivers.
One way to reduce car insurance rates for new drivers is to get her
the right car
. Generally speaking, the safer the car, the lower the premium. (And the calmer your nerves when you watch her drive away.)
Keep in mind that safer does not mean newer!
Collision coverage
and
comprehensive coverage
can be the most expensive parts of a policy when it comes to young drivers. So the cheapest car to insure for your daughter is one that does not require these forms of insurance.
If you have an older car, consider dropping collision and comprehensive coverage completely and assigning your daughter as the driver of that vehicle. Older cars are often not worth the premiums associated with collision and comprehensive coverage. That’s because even if you totaled an old vehicle, you likely wouldn’t get your money’s worth from the insurance payout. (To be sure, you can check Kelley Blue Book to get an estimation of your car’s value.)
If the vehicle your daughter will be driving does in fact necessitate those types of expensive coverage, raising your deductibles to $1,000 or above can lower your premiums. However, a high deductible can lead to high costs if your daughter gets into an accident, so make sure you’re
choosing the deductible
that’s right for you.
Lastly, ask your provider about potential discounts. If your daughter is a straight-A student, she might be eligible for a good student discount. Many insurance agencies will lower premiums for students with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Here are some other discounts to look into:
