How did my insurance company find out I was married?

I just opened a letter from Progressive and it looks like they added my husband to the policy without my permission. How did they know we had gotten married? I didn't add him to my policy because I didn't want my insurance rate to go up. Can I have him removed?

“When an insurance company finds out about an undisclosed driver, they can and usually will force-add them to the policy.
Marriage licenses are considered public records.
Progressive
runs motor vehicle and consumer reports before every renewal, so the information about your husband probably showed up then.
Progressive requires spouses to be listed on their insurance policies, but don’t worry! You can do many things to lower the rate of your
car insurance
.
Does your husband have his own car? Get a quote to add it to your policy instead. The
multi-car discount
may save you up to 25%! In addition, Progressive has a great telematics program called SnapShot. Both cars would be eligible for that discount as long as you each have a cell phone number.
Another way to save is by bundling your auto and homeowners or renters policy together. If you are still not happy with your new rate, it may be time to shop for a new insurance company.
Using a comparison tool like the
Jerry app
will make this easy! Jerry collects personalized auto and home quotes from the top providers and brings the lowest available rates right to the app on your phone.
Congratulations on the wedding and I hope you two live a beautiful life together!”
