Does home insurance go up after a claim?

I had to file a home insurance claim three months ago. I just realized my policy is set to renew in the next month. I haven’t gotten an update rate yet, but I’m nervous. Will my home insurance go up after a claim?

It’s normal to feel nervous after filing a claim! Your home insurance can go up after a claim, but it doesn’t always.
Several factors go into how
home insurance
companies determine rates, including:
  • Amount of claim paid out
  • Type of claim
  • Location
  • Insurance rates
  • Claim history
If you’ve only filed one claim, you likely won’t see as much of an increase as someone who has filed several. Some states also have laws against raising insurance rates after filing a single claim.
Since you’re nervous, the best thing you can do is reach out to your insurance provider. With your renewal up soon, an agent should be able to provide you with your rate for the next policy term.
Apart from reaching out to your current company, shop around. Insurance companies all determine rates differently, so even if your rate increases, it doesn’t mean every company will give you a higher rate.
If you’d rather leave the hard work of gathering quotes to someone else, use
