How do you open the gas tank on a Jeep Trailhawk?
I recently bought a used Jeep Trailhawk and am having trouble opening the fuel filler door so I can refuel—how do you open the gas tank on a Jeep Trailhawk?

This is a bit of a tricky question as the Trailhawk isn’t a model offered by Jeep, but a trim level offered on four Jeep
Models:
- Grand Cherokee
- Cherokee
- Compass
- Renegade
All of which have slightly different methods for opening the gas tank. Check below for instructions based on each model.
How to open the gas tank on a 2013 - 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk:
- Push the fuel filler door release switch on the left side of the instrument panel underneath the headlamp switch. Within a few seconds the fuel filler door will automatically open part-way.
- Exit the vehicle and pull the fuel filler door open the rest of the way.
- Unscrew the gas cap (it turns counterclockwise) and set the cap in the holder attached to the inside of the fuel filler door.
How to open the gas tank on a 2014 - 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk:
- Press the fuel filler door release switch on the driver’s side door trim. Within a few seconds, the fuel filler door will automatically pop open part-way.
- Exit the vehicle and pull the fuel door open all the way.
- Unscrew the gas cap (it turns counterclockwise) and set the cap in the holder attached to the inside of the fuel filler door.
How to open the gas tank on a 2014 - 2017 Jeep Compass Trailhawk:
- Make sure the doors are unlocked and switch the engine off.
- Exit the vehicle and walk to the fuel filler door.
- Use the upraised tab on the edge of the fuel filler door to pull it open.
- Unscrew the gas cap (it turns counterclockwise) and hang the gas cap tether on the hook attached to the inside of the fuel filler door.
How to open the gas tank on a 2015 - 2021 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk:
- Make sure the doors are unlocked and switch the engine off.
- Exit the vehicle and walk to the fuel filler door.
- Push and release the circular indentation point near the edge of the fuel filler door to open it.
- There is no gas cap to remove—simply insert the fuel nozzle into the fuel filler pipe and start pumping gas.
If you have a newer version of any of these models, the process to open the gas tank is the same—simply unlock the doors, switch the engine off, and press in on the rear center edge of the fuel filler door to open it. There is no gas cap to remove so you’re all set to refuel as soon as you open the fuel filler door.
