background
The fastest charging option for a Rivian R1S is using Rivian’s own “Adventure Network” of Level 3 DC fast chargers or another public DC charger. They claim a charging rate of 140 miles in 20 minutes. Charging at home on a regular 120-volt outlet will only provide a few miles of range per hour.
Charging times are a hugely important aspect when it comes to deciding on an
electric vehicle
model. Unfortunately, it’s one area where Rivian’s truck and SUV models have slightly underperformed compared to competitors.
Let’s take a look at a Rivian R1S’s various charging options and how long each method will take to provide you with the range you need.

How long does a 2022 Rivian R1S take to charge?

The amount of time it will take to charge your Rivian R1S will depend on the charging method you use. At home, you can charge from 10% to 100% battery in as short as 11.5 hours with the right equipment. Out on the road, you can charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 27 minutes using a Level 3 DC fast charger.
The 2022 model of the Rivian R1S is the only one that’s been released so far. It comes with a 128.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack that provides an EPA-estimated range of 316 miles, although Car and Driver reported that range was significantly reduced on the highway. We’ll be using the 316-mile range estimate to calculate approximate charge times.

At-home charging speeds for a 2022 Rivian R1S

With the standard Portable Charger that comes with all Rivian models connected to a regular 120-volt connection, Rivian says it will charge up to three miles of range per hour. That means it will take about 95 hours to charge all the way from 10% to 100%.
Alternatively, your portable charger can deliver electricity to your R1S via a 240V outlet. These types of outlets are usually available in an average home’s garage. If you’re trying to identify yours, it has a circular shape with two parallel slim prongs, an L-shaped prong, and a square prong that’s rounded on one side.
With a 240V outlet setup, your R1S will receive up to 16 miles of range per hour. At that rate, you’ll be able to charge from 10 to 100% in a more acceptable 18 hours.
Rivian also builds its own Rivian Wall Charger that’s available for purchase and can be installed in your garage and connected to your 240V outlet. This is the fastest at-home charging option, providing up to 25 miles of range per hour, allowing you to charge overnight and wake up to a fairly full battery. At this speed, you can charge from 10 to 100% in about 11.5 hours. The Rivian Wall Charger comes with an extra cost of $800, and they charge extra if you want it professionally installed.

Public charging speeds for a 2022 Rivian R1S

The Rivian Wall Charger still won’t charge your R1S nearly as quickly as a public DC fast charger, also known as a Level 3 charger. Level 3 DC fast charging is the fastest way to charge a Rivian R1S.
Rivian and other companies have installed plenty of Level 2 public chargers around the U.S. and Canada, and these charge about as quickly as the at-home wall charger. That’s about 11.5 hours for a full charge from 10% or up to 25 miles of range per hour.
However, when it comes to Level 3 DC fast charging, Rivian says you’ll get 140 miles of range from 20 minutes of charging—this means a 20% to 80% charge time of 27 minutes. The Level 3 chargers that make up the Rivian Adventure Network have an output of 200 kW, and they predict that with upcoming updates, your Rivian will be able to charge even faster. Future output estimates for Rivian DC fast chargers are above 300 kW.

The Rivian R1S is also equipped with an in-vehicle navigation system that is linked to a map of available Level 2 and Level 3 public charging stations. This system can automatically plan ideal stops at charging locations along your journey.
