The quickest way to charge your Rivian R1T is with a DC fast charger, which can add up to 140 miles in 20 minutes. At home, a Rivian Wall Charger will deliver 25 miles of range with each hour of charging.
The R1T is an electric truck with mind-blowing performance both off-road and on, and boasts impressive stats like a 14.9-inch ground clearance, the ability to drive through three feet of water, and up to 11,000 pounds of towing capacity. Add on a range of 260 to 400 miles on a full charge and a 0 to 60 time of three seconds, and you’ve got a vehicle that should make the folks at Tesla feel nervous.
But the specs on any EV mean nothing if you can’t charge it, and many potential EV owners have concerns about charging times. Here to fill you in on the charging time of the Rivian R1T is

How long does a 2022 Rivian R1T take to charge?

From totally empty to fully charged, it can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to charge a Rivian R1T battery
Of course, there are a whole lot of variables here, depending on the size of battery you have and the type of charger you’re using. Charging a battery between 20% to 80% of capacity is typically the quickest, with the final 20% taking a bit longer to reach.
The 2022 Rivian R1T is offered with a 128.9 kWH battery, which the manufacturer claims can get you up to 314 miles on a full charge. Future years will have a smaller standard battery that will get you at least 260 miles according to Rivian, and 2023 will also bring the availability of the “Max” battery with an impressive professed range of more than 400 miles
The R1T currently has four motors—one at each wheel. A two-motor set-up will be an option for buyers in the future. The four motors generate up to 835 horsepower and give the R1T a 0-60 time of three seconds, which is unheard of in a pickup truck.
The quad-motor configuration also gives the R1T the ability to turn the left and the right wheels in opposite directions, allowing it to pivot on its axis in what Rivian calls a “
Tank Turn
”. This has nothing whatsoever to do with charging time—we just think it’s neat.
At any rate, once you’re finished spinning around and giggling maniacally, you’ll need to charge the thing. Of course, the larger the battery you have, the longer it will take to charge—but the kind of charger you’re using is going to be the biggest factor when it comes to charging speed.

At-home charging speeds for a 2022 Rivian R1T

For at-home charging, Rivian’s
Wall Charger
is the fastest route you can take. This charger is weather-proof, WiFi-enabled, and can be installed inside or outside. Charging this way can add up to 25 miles of range per hour and is a good option for overnight charging.
You also have the option of charging on the go with the
Rivian Portable Charger
, which is small enough to stash in the glove box. This will allow you to plug into any standard 240 or 120-volt outlet and charge up, although the rate here is much slower—about 16 and 3 miles of range per hour, respectively. But this would be a workable option if you were at a campsite or hotel that had basic electrical hookups or in case of an emergency.

Public charging speeds for a 2022 Rivian R1T

So, there are your options for at-home charging—but what about when you’re out and about? Rivian is currently working on building its own system of Rivian-only DC fast charging stations called the
Rivian Adventure Network
About 600 of these puppies will be strategically located along popular routes in the US and Canada, and also at sites off the beaten path as well so you can adventure with confidence. With this level of charging, you can add up to 140 miles in 20 minutes, which should keep you rolling along quite nicely. And as a bonus, they’ll be powered with 100% renewable energy—nice!
Rivian is also working on a network of Level 2 chargers called Rivian Waypoints. This will consist of a network of over 10,000 Level 2 chargers that will be placed at locations like shopping areas, hotels, campsites, restaurants, and parks. With these chargers, you’ll be able to add up to 25 miles of range per hour, so you can get a quick top-off while you’re doing your day-to-day driving. You can find Adventure Network locations and Rivian Waypoints with your Rivian app, and the Waypoints are open to anyone using a J1772 plug.
Of course, you don’t have to stick to Rivian’s charging network. Rivian vehicles are all compatible with CCS (combined charging system) networks, which is the most commonly used system. One caveat: there are conflicting reports on whether or not you can charge a Rivian at a Tesla-branded charger. If you’re purchasing a Rivian, make sure you ask your dealer detailed questions about exactly where you can charge up.
Based on the currently available 128.9-watt battery with the claimed 314 miles of range, here’s an estimation of how long it would take to fully charge up your R1T:
Charging method
estimated charging time
120-volt outlet
104 hours
240-volt outlet
20 hours
Rivian Wall Connector
13 hours
Rivian Waypoint (Level 2)
13 hours
Rivian Adventure Network (DCFC)
2.5 hours
This is rough math simply based on dividing the total range by the miles added per hour of charging and the rate of charging isn’t linear—meaning the last 20% can go at a slower rate than the 80% that preceded it. But you get the general idea.

How to save on Rivian insurance costs

With these specs and a starting MSRP of $73,000, it’s a fair bet that
car insurance
for an R1T is not going to come cheap. Plus, this is not a vehicle that you’ll want to skimp on when it comes to coverage.
