could require anywhere from five hours and 30 minutes to just two hours and 10 minutes, depending on your charging setup and location.
The Toyota Prius Prime is the plug-in hybrid electric version of Toyota’s classic Prius. While the plug-in option does give the Prius Prime a big advantage in terms of fuel economy and driving range, it also means that you’ll need to learn how (and where) to charge your vehicle to use the battery function.
Fortunately, finding the right charging site for your Prius Prime is as easy as locating the nearest three-prong outlet in your home. If you want faster charging, though, you might need to purchase an adapter.
Let’s take a closer look at your charging options for the Toyota Prius Prime and how long each of these options takes to fully charge your car.

How long does a Toyota Prius Prime take to charge?

Depending on the type of charger you use, it could take anywhere from 5.5 hours to just two hours to charge your Toyota Prius Prime.
There are three trim levels for the Toyota Prius Prime: the standard LE, the upgraded XLE, and the top-of-the-line Limited. Each of these vehicles is equipped with a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing, an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, and a front-wheel drivetrain. All trim levels also have an 8.8 kWh 352 V lithium-ion battery.
This 8.8-kWh battery pack is located at the rear of your vehicle and can power your car for 25 miles on battery alone before your gas-powered engine kicks in.
Since each Toyota Prius Prime trim has the same battery pack and engine, the charge time is the same no matter which trim level you choose. Since Toyota hasn’t changed the Prius Prime battery since its introduction in the U.S. in 2016, every model year is also the same.
However, the charger you use can have a big impact on your Prius’s charge time. You might choose to charge your hybrid via a household outlet or a public outlet, or you might even consider using a supercharger station for your Toyota.
Ready to take a closer look at all the ways you can power your Prius? Let’s dive into your Toyota Prius Prime charging options.

At-home charging speeds for a Toyota Prius Prime

Of course, the most convenient way to charge your Toyota Prius Prime is via a standard three-pronged outlet in your home. You’ll get a standard outlet charging cable with your Prius, which you can use in a garage outlet to charge your vehicle. However, this is also the slowest way to charge your car, so keep in mind that you will sacrifice efficiency for convenience.
When using a 120-volt charger, which is also referred to as a Level 1 charger in the world of electric and hybrid vehicles, your Prius Prime requires up to five hours and 30 minutes to reach a full charge. This isn’t a terribly long time to let your car sit on the charger, but it might be inconvenient if you forget to plug in your vehicle.
If you’d like to speed up the charging time for your Prius Prime, you could also purchase a 240v National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) 14-30/14-50 charger adapter, which allows your vehicle to reach a full charge within about two hours. This requires a different kind of outlet, like the ones used by your washing machine or dryer.
If you have access to this type of outlet and want a more efficient charging station in your house, purchasing the NEMA 14-30/14-50 adapter is the way to go.

Public charging speeds for a Toyota Prius Prime

While home charging is typically the most convenient option for charging your Prius, sometimes your battery needs a boost while you’re out and about. For situations like these, there are public charging stations.
Most public charging stations that you’ll find out in the wild are Level 2 chargers, just like the NEMA adapter option available for your home. Since these chargers are the same type as the NEMA adapters, you can expect them to take about the same amount of time to charge your Prius Prime, too.
If you intend to rely on public charging stations to power up, however, keep in mind that you’ll need to sit with your car for a little over two hours to reach a full charge in your Prius Prime. It’s also important to remember that public charging stations aren’t as frequent as gas stations, so you’ll need to plan trips accordingly and check your area for charging options.
The next charging level available at public charging stations is the DC fast charger, also known as a Level 3 charger. This type of charger delivers even more power than a standard Level 2 chargerm and therefore the wait time on these chargers is significantly lower. However, like many other plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, the Toyota Prius is not equipped to use DC fast charging ports.
This is because the Prius has such a battery and, therefore, doesn’t need to have such a high influx of power in order to charge quickly.
