2022 Rivian R1T range
The Rivian R1T is brand new for the 2022 model year and is only offered with a 128.9-kWh "Large" battery pack, which has an EPA-rated driving range of 314 miles. This does not vary across trim levels but applies to the base-level Explore the better-equipped Adventure, and the limited Launch Edition.
Next year, two new battery packs are set to arrive—a smaller standard battery with a range of at least 260 miles and a “Max” battery with an alleged minimum of 400 miles per charge.
As Rivian notes—and as driving tests confirm—these maximum driving ranges only apply in the best of circumstances. For example, the vehicle has to be equipped with the proper tires and wheels. For the R1T, that means 21-inch Road wheels.
Take a look at how driving ranges vary when the R1T is equipped with different tires:
Other factors that may decrease the R1T’s range include towing. Rivian claims that the R1T can tow more than 11,000 pounds and the pickup offers a payload capacity of 1760 pounds. However, loading up your pickup truck will deplete the battery much more quickly—so if you plan to use your pickup as, well, a pickup, you might want to wait until the Max battery is released.
2022 Rivian R1T charging time and fuel economy
In addition to driving range, you’ll want to consider two other major factors when shopping for a new electric vehicle: charging time and fuel economy.
Charging time refers to how long it’ll take your car’s battery to go from 0 to 100%—and it’s a great way to determine exactly how easy your vehicle will be to live with. And just like driving range can vary based on tire type, charging time depends entirely on the type of socket you use.
Take a look at R1T charging times for different types of sockets:
| Charging time from 0% to 100% |
---|
| |
| |
DC fast-charging station (i.e., Tesla Supercharger) | |
And what about fuel economy? Fuel economy refers to how far a vehicle can travel on a specific amount of fuel—the higher the fuel economy, the less fuel your car burns through. For electric vehicles, fuel economy is measured in miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe).
It just so happens that the R1T is one of the first electric pickup trucks to receive a fuel economy rating from the EPA. It gets an estimated 74 MPGe city, 66 MPGe highway, and 70 MPGe combined.

How does the Rivian R1T compare to its competitors?
Electric vehicles are still relatively new—and all-electric pickup trucks are even newer. Still, the Rivian R1T has some exciting competitors, including the Tesla Cybertruck, the GMC Hummer EV, the Chevrolet Silverado
, and the Ford F-150 Lightning. Here’s how these five trucks compare:
| | | | | Average annual repair cost | |
---|
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | |
| | | | | | |
The R1T is among one of the most expensive options for all-electric pickup trucks—so, if you’re looking for something more affordable, Tesla, Chevy, or Ford’s options are a much better bet.
If driving range is a top concern for you, however, Rivian’s truck is one of your very best options. Only the Chevrolet Silverado and Tesla Cybertruck measure up—and that’s with the very top trims.
The Rivian R1T is the top of the line in terms of performance, too. Only the GMC Hummer EV accelerates faster.

RECOMMENDEDThis app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
