How to replace a lost driver’s license in North Dakota

Thankfully, the process of applying for a duplicate license in North Dakota is easy-peasy. There are a lot of options to get you back on the road, including applying for a new one online, in person, or by mail or fax.

Replacing a lost North Dakota license online

If you know your driver’s license number, you can apply online for a duplicate license and avoid a long wait at a North Dakota Department of Transportation (ND DOT) office. 
You can visit the ND
DOT Substitute License/ID card
page to apply for a duplicate license. You’ll need to provide
proof of address
, which might include a property tax statement, current utility bill, or mortgage or rental document. 
You’ll have to pay an $8 replacement fee and allow at least 10 days for processing.

Replacing a lost North Dakota license in person

If you want to apply for a
REAL ID
, or would just prefer to apply for a duplicate license in person, you’ll want to make an appointment at a
DOT office
Be sure to check the DOT
requirements
page for a detailed list of what’s needed to replace your license—especially if you’re applying for a REAL ID, which has more specifications.
To replace your driver’s license, you’ll need to show:
  • Proof of identity: US or foreign birth certificate, passport, military ID, certificate of citizenship, certificate of naturalization
  • Social Security number: A marriage certificate, adoption certificate, divorce decree
  • Proof of address: A Social Security card, W2, 1099, pay stub
  • Evidence of name change, if applicable: A marriage certificate, adoption certificate, divorce decree
Only original or certified documents will be allowed. For a full list of acceptable documentation, visit the North Dakota DOT website. 
After you’ve paid the $8 fee, an ND DOT agent will award you with a temporary license or receipt until your replacement license arrives. In some cases, it may take a few weeks to arrive.

What if you lose your North Dakota license out of state?

If you are out of state and lose your license, you may apply for a replacement by email, mail, or fax.
You will need to provide:
  • Your name as it appears on your driver's license and date of birth
  • Your driver's license or Social Security number
  • Your mailing address, as well as a phone number or email address where you can be contacted
  • An explanation of how your license became lost or stolen and your signature
