Replacing a lost North Carolina license online

First and foremost, North Carolina doesn't require reporting a lost or stolen driver's license to police, but it’s strongly recommended, as it can help combat identity theft.
To apply for a replacement license, you’ll want to visit the
MyNCDMV
portal. You’ll need:
  • A valid email address
  • Your license number
  • A method of payment (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover credit card)
You’ll pay a $14 replacement fee, as well as a $3 online processing fee. You can expect to receive your replacement license by mail in 20 days.

Replacing a lost North Carolina license in person

There are certain circumstances where replacing a license online isn’t an option. These circumstances include:
  • Your license is currently suspended
  • You have outstanding fines with the DMV
  • You’re applying for a duplicate commercial driver’s license
  • You want to apply for a
    REAL ID
If any of these circumstances apply, you’ll need to apply for a replacement license at an
NC DMV
office.
Check the
NC DMV requirements
page for a detailed list of the documents you may need to replace your license. In general, you can expect to show:
  • Two proofs of age and identity (e.g. certified birth certificate, social security, valid ID card)
  • Proof of name change, if applicable (e.g. certified marriage or divorce decree)
  • Payment (e.g. cash, check, or money order)
After the necessary documentation has been shown, and you’ve paid the $14 fee, an NC DMV agent will take your photo and give you a temporary driving permit. You can expect to receive your duplicate license by mail within a couple of weeks.

What if you lose your North Carolina license out of state?

The process is the same for replacing a license while out of state.
You can replace a lost or stolen North Carolina driver’s license while out of state or on military assignment online as long as you meet the same criteria above.
If you are not eligible to replace your license online, you’ll need to visit an NC DMV branch when you are back in-state.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
