How to Upgrade Your C10 Sound System

Upgrading your C10’s sound system can bring modern functionality to a classic vehicle, but it could raise your insurance costs.

background
The standard sound system on the C10 is pretty lackluster—especially given how much audio technology has advanced since these classic trucks first rolled off the factory floors. To get better sound quality, replace the factory speakers and add a subwoofer and amplifier.
The Chevrolet C10 has that distinct old-school-cool look. And while there’s no denying this truck is a classic, some of its tech specs can benefit from an upgrade. For example, swapping out your C10’s ancient speakers can help add a much-needed dose of modern functionality without disrupting your truck’s aesthetic.

What kind of sound system does a C10 have?

The last year of production for the C10 was 1987, so you won’t find much in terms of the sound system. The truck comes with two kick-panel speakers, an FM/AM radio….and that’s it. You won’t find a fancy infotainment system, high-tech amplifier, or subwoofer inside this truck.
While you can do quite a bit to achieve a clearer, crispier, and overall bigger sound from your C10, don’t expect to bring your car entirely into the 21st century. If a large infotainment screen, backup camera, and Siri or Alexa voice control is really what you’re after, we hate to be the bearers of bad news, but that isn’t possible with a C10.

How to upgrade C10 sound system

When upgrading any car’s sound system—whether it’s a brand new or a vintage set of wheels—you can’t go wrong with the trifecta: new speakers, an amplifier, and a subwoofer. The best news is that you add these to your C10 while maintaining it’s old-school-cool look!

Start with speaker upgrades

Let’s start with the basics: new speakers. If the music coming from your C10’s ancient speakers has you cocking your head and wondering What song is even playing?, then you’re probably long overdue for an upgrade.
However, the actual installation process can be tricky. Because C10 speakers mount on the kick panel, they can be difficult to remove and replace. Because the C10 is an older vehicle, we recommend taking it to either a shop specializing in sound systems or classic cars—or both!
In the realm of speakers, there are two main kinds: component and coaxial. Coaxial speakers are generally cheaper, but component speakers deliver better sound quality. For the C10, we like these speakers:
A note about tweeters: while they can significantly enhance audio quality, they also require custom paneling work as a part of the installation process. For the C10, we’d recommend angling your tweeters upwards for better sound quality. And while tweeters can elevate your sound quality, the custom panel work they require can add up quickly.

Pump up the bass with a subwoofer

Space inside the C10 is limited, so you have to get creative with where you put your subwoofer. We’d recommend installing your subwoofer behind the bench seats.
For the C10, we recommend purchasing something smaller like this
Alpine PWD-X5
. At only 8 inches, this subwoofer packs a mighty punch. And, it’s a clever two-in-one bonus because it has a built-in amplifier!
Or, for something just as small that’s subwoofer-only, we also like the
Kicker 48TCWRT82
.

What’s the difference between a 2-ohm and 4-ohm subwoofer?

When shopping around for subwoofers, you’ll encounter two types: 2-ohm and 4-ohm. There’s no objective answer to which is better, it really boils down to your own personal taste. A 2-ohm speaker will deliver a louder, punchier sound, and a 4-ohm one is much deeper and clearer.

Boost the power with an amplifier

Lastly, let’s talk about amplifiers. You can install the amplifier underneath the seats of your C10 to unlock more sound. Even with top-of-the-line speakers, you’re still missing out without an amplifier. An amp boosts low-level audio signals from the main speakers in order to provide more powerful sound.
For the C10, we’re partial to something like the
JL Audio JD400/4
or the
Alpine KTA-200M Power Pack
.
