What is the right tire pressure for a Toyota Prius?

Most Prius models in recent years have come with one of two rim sizes (15” or 17”), each with a slightly different tire pressure recommendation. Here are the recommended Toyota Prius tire pressures for the most  commonly used tire sizes:
  • 15” rim (195/65R15): 36 psi for front and 35 psi for rear tires
  • 17” rim (215/45R17): 33 psi for front and 32 psi for rear tires
You can find your tire and rim size on the side of your tires, the “R15” or “R17” tell you the wheel size. Confirm your car’s recommended tire pressure by checking the owner’s manual or the sticker on your driver’s side door jamb.
It is advisable to slightly over-inflate your winter tires if you live somewhere with cold winters. Inflating your winter tires 3-5 psi above the manufacturer's recommendation can help account for the pressure lost in the cold.

How to check Toyota Prius tire pressure

Knowing how to check your tire pressure is integral to car ownership. Fortunately, if you don’t know how, it is super straightforward and by the time you finish this article, you will be ready the next time you notice a low tire.
You will need a
tire pressure gauge
. If you don’t have a tire pressure gauge, most gas station air fill stations have a gauge built into the air hose.
To check your tire pressure, all you have to do is remove the tire’s valve stem cap and push the tire pressure gauge on the valve stem. Make sure to seal the valve fully. The gauge will give you a pressure reading which you can use to inflate or deflate your tires as needed.
Of course, one way to know if your tire pressure is low is when the tire pressure light turns on. However, before the light turns on, you might notice your car starts handling unevenly, feel strange to steer, or get reduced mileage. You might, of course, also just see a tire that looks a little flatter than the others.

How often should you check tire pressure?

It’s a good idea to check your tire pressure every once in a while to ensure things are where they should be. Once a month is a good rule of thumb. Of course, you should also check your tire pressure whenever you suspect one or more tires are getting low and before any long drives.

How to tell if your Toyota Prius needs new tires

Tires have a pretty long life span, averaging about 50,000 to 60,000 miles, which based on average driving habits, amounts to around 3 to 5 years.
Your tires will have more or less life in them depending on several factors like how you drive, where you drive, and the type of tires you buy.
You should check your tread depth regularly to avoid unsafe driving conditions. Tires with a tread depth of 1/16” or less should be retired. A handy trick for checking the depth is the penny method. Stick a penny between your treads, leading with Lincoln’s head. If you can see the top of Honest Abe’s head, your tread is too low.

How to reset the Toyota Prius tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light

Your tires come equipped with a sensor designed to turn on a dash light whenever a tire’s pressure gets too low: the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). A common issue is the TPMS light staying lit after fixing your tire pressure. Here’s how to reset the TPMS on your Toyota Prius:
  • Make sure all of your tire pressure meet the manufacturer's recommendations, then
  • Turn the car on, but don’t start the engine
  • Find the TPMS reset button–it should be a button that says “set” and is located to the left of the steering wheel
  • Press and hold the reset button until the TPMS light flashes
  • Wait a few minutes, then turn the car off
If you notice your TPMS light turns on, blinks for a minute, and then stays on, this indicates an issue with the TPMS system, not your tire pressure. In this case, it’s best to take your car to the mechanic or try employing an OBD-II scanner to help isolate the issue.
