How many wheels does a bus have?

I always figured that smaller buses had four wheels, but recently I saw a school bus that has two on each side of the rear. How many wheels do buses have?

With vehicles of all shapes and sizes on the roads, it’s not always easy to know what’s standard. I’m happy to answer your question and tell you how many wheels are on the average bus.
Although some smaller buses have the standard four wheels, it’s common for vehicles like school buses to have six wheels. Usually, they have two wheels in the front and four wheels in the back.
You might think it’s odd to see wheels side-by-side behind a bus, but there are plenty of reasons for that. Having extra wheels:
  • Helps support a lot of weight
  • Improves grip for the driver
  • Improves braking
For vehicles that are usually transporting children,
safety is
of course a top priority. Having six wheels is one of the many precautions that are taken to ensure a safe trip.
Some buses have far more than six wheels. Many cities have extra-long buses, known as articulated buses, which they use for their public transportation systems. It is not uncommon for articulated buses to have eight or more wheels.
