2015 Toyota Tacoma engine oil capacity

The engine oil capacity for your 2015 Toyota Tacoma depends on which engine you have. The 2015 Tacoma come in a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine, a 4.0-liter V6 2WD, and a 4.0-liter V6 4WD. They all have different oil capacities that amount to:
  • 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine: 6.1 qt or 5.8 L
  • 4.0-liter V6 engine 2WD models (except the PreRunner): 4.8 qt or 4.5 L
  • 4.0-liter V6 engine 4WD models (and PreRunner): 5.5 qt or 5.2 L
There are a few things to remember here. The first is that these are the oil capacities when also replacing the oil filter (which is recommended with every oil change), and the other is to be sure not to confuse oil capacity with engine displacement. The “2.7-liter engine” or “4.0-liter engine” refers to the engine’s displacement or the total volume swept by the pistons. This is a way of communicating engine size and is distinct from oil capacity.

What kind of oil does a 2015 Toyota Tacoma need?

The oil capacity isn’t the only thing that varies based on which engine size you have. Toyota also recommends oils of differing viscosity. For the 2.7-liter engine, Toyota recommends using Toyota Genuine 0W-20 synthetic motor oil. For the 4.0-liter engine, Toyota recommends Toyota Genuine 5W-30 synthetic motor oil.
Of course, you don’t have to use Toyota Genuine motor oil, any synthetic SAE 0W-20 or 5W-30 motor oil will work.
What’s the difference between the two? Both are multi-grade motor oils, meaning they are tested and rated at multiple temperatures, hence the two numbers. The first number tells you how the oil behaves at 0°F, and the second is how it behaves at normal operating temperatures of 212°F. So a 0W-20 is slightly less viscous throughout the temperature range than an oil with a rating of 0W-30.
Sticking to the manufacturer's recommendation, though, is the best way to ensure you get optimal performance and longevity out of your engine. Luckily Toyota makes their own Genuine Toyota Motor Oil, so it is always easy to remember what is recommended in the owner's manual.

How often to change the oil on a 2015 Toyota Tacoma

You may have heard the rule of thumb that says to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, however, that is largely for conventional oil. One of the benefits of using synthetic oil is that, even though it is more expensive up front, you can get roughly twice the mileage out of it.
Experts recommend changing your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles when using synthetic oil. The range is so large because several factors can impact the wear on your oil, like outdoor conditions, engine age, and driving habits. The best practice is to check your oil every month or so to look for signs that it’s time to change your oil, such as:
  • Oil that has turned black or dark brown. Clean oil is amber or light brown and transparent
  • Oil that feels gritty and coarse
  • Unfamiliar sounds
    coming from the engine bay
  • Scents of burning, oil, or smoke
  • Reduction in vehicle performance

How to change your oil

If you’ve decided to change your oil yourself, then it’s time to gather your tools. You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, a new filter, and the appropriate type and volume of motor oil. Now, just follow these steps:
  • Start by running your engine for a few minutes to bring your engine up to normal operating temperatures, then turn off the engine and pop the hood
  • Remove the oil fill cap
  • Under the engine, remove the drain bolt and washer and let the oil drain into the pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and let the oil drain completely
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt with a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Fill the engine with clean oil, double-check the fill level, and replace the fill cap
  • Run your engine for a few minutes, looking for leaks
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
That’s it! Once you’re done, don’t just dump your old oil down the gutter, put it in a sealed container and take it to your local recycling center.
