2020 Toyota Tacoma engine oil capacity

The first thing you’ll need to know before you begin working on your Tacoma is its engine oil capacity.
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma features the driver’s choice of a base 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine or an upgraded 3.5-liter V6. These engines both require 6.2 quarts or 5.9 liters of engine oil
Note that the liter values tied to the engine type represent the engine’s displacement rather than its oil capacity. The engine’s displacement describes the volume that the four or six cylinders take up, whereas the oil capacity of each engine highlights the required engine oil for optimal operation.

What kind of oil does a 2020 Toyota Tacoma need?

Your 2020 Tacoma will require 6.2 quarts of engine oil, but it won’t accept every type of oil. Yup, you read that correctly—not all engine oils are the same, so you won’t be able to pick up the first bottle you see.
The following engine oils are generally recommended for the 2020 Toyota Tacoma:
In particular, you’re looking for oils with “0W-20” specifications. These letters and numbers refer to the oil’s viscosity—or thickness—where the “W” stands for winter and the number 0 refers to its low viscosity at 0°F. Alternatively, the number 20 highlights the oil’s thin consistency at 212°F, or blazing hot. SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, the engine oil viscosity engineers.
0W-20 oil performs extremely well under both cold and hot weather conditions, ensuring limited wear and tear to your engine no matter the environment or climate. Note that each of the recommended oil types is synthetic motor oils, which have higher durability ratings and tend to last longer.

How often to change oil on a 2020 Toyota Tacoma

With 6.2 quarts of 0W-20 engine oil, you can now
change your oil
—but only if it’s time for an oil change.
Toyota recommends changing your Tacoma’s engine oil every six to eight months or after 3,000 to 5,000 miles. While synthetic oil typically lasts longer, you won’t want to push your Tacoma oil changes further than 7,500 miles, especially if it’s your daily commuter.
But 3,000 to 7,500 miles is a pretty big range, and your vehicle could show signs of needing an oil change well before that six to eight-month mark. To keep your engine oil and vehicle performance in line, you can practice regular oil-level inspections on a monthly or bi-weekly basis. Keep an eye out for the following bad signs:
  • Dark brown or black oil (clean oil is light brown or amber)
  • Thick, coarse, or gritty oil
  • Unfamiliar engine sounds
  • Weird smells (oil, smoke, or burning)
  • Unusual vehicle performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you’ve decided your Tacoma is ready for an oil change, or if the maintenance reminder has notified you that the engine oil needs to be replaced, you can gather your materials and head out to your truck.
You’ll need a drain pan, a socket wrench, a filter wrench, and 6.2 quarts of high-quality synthetic 0W-20 engine oil
Park your Tacoma on a flat surface and begin by turning it on. Let it run for a few minutes to heat up the engine and oil, then shut the car off and open the hood. Next, follow these steps:
  • Under the hood, remove the oil fill cap
  • Beneath the engine, remove the engine skid plate and place the drain pan under the oil drain plug
  • Remove the oil drain plug and washer
  • Remove the old oil filter while the oil drains
  • Install the new filter with new housing and seals, and add a coat of oil around the gasket
  • Replace the oil drain plug using a new washer and tighten it to 18 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and put the oil fill cap back
Once you’ve completed these steps, you can turn your Tacoma on and let it run for a minute or two. When you turn the car off, use the dipstick to check the oil level and add or remove oil as necessary.
If the oil level is good to go, you can run the vehicle for a couple of minutes and keep an eye out for leaks. If everything looks good, you can go ahead and
reset your maintenance reminder system
!
Lastly, be sure to seal your old engine oil in a sturdy container and dispose of it at a recycling center or an auto shop that accepts used oil.
