If you’re driving an older car like the 2006 Honda Civic, routine maintenance is the best way to keep your car running as it should. This includes knowing your Civic’s engine oil capacity, which is 3.9 quarts.
Hondas are known for their longevity and good fuel economy, but you’ll need to take care of your Civic if you want to get as many miles out of it as possible. One of the best ways to do this is to make sure you’re filling your engine with the correct amount of oil and the right oil type—especially if you plan on doing your own oil changes.
You can find out the engine oil capacity details in your Civic owner’s manual, but if you can’t find it or would rather ask us—it’s all good!

2006 Honda Civic engine oil capacity

Before you run off and buy
engine oil
for your Civic, you need to know how much oil to put in the engine
Your 2006 Honda Civic has an engine oil capacity of 3.9 quarts. All 2006 Civic sedans and coupes have a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine. It’s super important that you don’t
overfill the engine oil
. If you do, you could risk causing damage to your Civic’s engine.

What kind of oil does a 2006 Honda Civic need?

So now that you’ve got the engine oil capacity down, what kind of oil will you need to fill your 2006 Civic with?
According to the owner’s manual, it’s recommended that you use Genuine Honda Motor Oil Premium-grade 5W-20. This is a fully synthetic oil.
If you're wondering what “5W-20” means, the “5” refers to the oil’s viscosity—also known as its thickness while the “W” stands for winter. A 5W classification indicates that the oil is suitable for very cold temperatures. The “20” means that the oil will remain at a low viscosity in very hot temperatures as well.
Fully synthetic oil is widely known as being the best type of motor oil because it flows better and lasts longer in your engine than
conventional oil
does.

How often to change the oil on a 2006 Honda Civic

Since synthetic oil lasts longer in your car, you won’t have to change it as often as you would if you use conventional oil. With full synthetic,
oil changes
should be performed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles
That is a pretty wide range, so to be on the safe side, you should be
checking your oil
regularly to make sure nothing is amiss.
Clean engine oil is a translucent amber color, and as you drive your Civic it gradually becomes dirtier. If you check your oil and notice that it's gritty, sludgy, dark brown like cola—or if it's black—it needs to be changed right away.
It’s also important to pay attention to how your car is driving. If you notice the engine lagging or feeling clunky, if you hear loud sounds under the hood, or if you smell smoke or burning, don’t ignore it. This is your Civic’s way of letting you know something is up, so you should have it looked at so that the problem doesn’t worsen due to negligence.

How to change your oil and oil filter

Ready to give changing the oil on your Civic a try? The first thing you need to do is gather up all of your materials. Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Rubber or latex gloves
  • Car jack and jack stands
  • 19mm socket wrench
  • 14mm crush washer
  • Oil drain pan
  • Oil funnel
  • Oil filter replacement
  • At least 4 quarts of 5W-20 synthetic engine oil
Start by running the car for a few minutes to warm up the oil. Make sure you’ve parked your Civic on level ground before you jack it up and position the jack stands underneath.
  • Underneath the car, you will see an oil pan which is labeled “engine oil”. Loosen the oil drain plug and washer with your socket wrench and remove it by hand. Make sure your oil drain pan is set underneath to catch the oil as it empties.
  • Remove the oil filter cap by hand. Let the oil drain into the drain pan.
  • Coat the seal of the new oil filter with fresh engine oil and install it by hand.
  • Place the new crush washer onto the oil drain plug bolt and reinstall it by hand.
  • Fill the engine with oil, checking the level periodically to prevent overfilling.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Run the engine for a few minutes so that you can check for leaks. If there are no leaks, you’ve completed the oil change! You should always bring your dirty engine oil in a sealed container and bring it to a recycling center.
