Materials needed: A socket wrench, a drain pan, a filter wrench, replacement filter, and oil of your choice.
Prep work: Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature, turn the engine off, and proceed to open the hood.
Now, follow these step-by-step instructions:
- Remove the oil fill cap
- From underneath the engine, you’ll want to remove the oil drain bolt and washer, which will drain the old oil into a pan below
- Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain until the drip stops
- Install the new oil filter
- Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
- Refill the engine with your oil of choice and replace the fill cap
After changing the oil and the filter, the job isn’t quite done. First, you’ll want to use your dipstick to ensure you’ve added the appropriate amount of oil. Then you’ll want to run the engine for a few minutes and watch for any leaks. If everything checks out, all you have to do is properly dispose of the old oil at a local recycling center.
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
