background
The Ford Maverick Tremor Off-Road Package is equal parts style and substance, designed for those who dare tough terrain and want to look the part. This package can be added to the XLT or Lariat trims for $2,995, but it requires a few other upgrades that can raise the cost significantly.
Only a year old, the Ford Maverick has already sold out until 2024. With its affordable starting price and wide range of optional equipment, this compact pickup has something for everyone. Ford has introduced a new toybox for the most daring of drivers in 2023: the Tremor Off-Road Package. So, is it a shakedown or a success?
We've written a complete guide to the Ford Maverick Tremor Off-Road package to help you answer that question. We'll explain what it is, how it works, and how much it costs. By the end of this article, you won't have to go rock crawling to know whether or not the Ford Maverick Tremor Off-Road package is worth your money!

What is the Ford Maverick Tremor Off-Road Package?

The Tremor Off-Road Package is an add-on for the 2023 and 2024 Ford Maverick. Despite its moderate price point, its prerequisites make it a big investment.
First, it’s only available for the mid-level XLT and top-level Lariat trims—not the base XL—and you must first equip the optional 250-hp, 2.0L EcoBoost engine rather than the 162-hp, 2.5L FHEV standard. Ordinary
all-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive
won’t do either—the Tremor package demands Advanced AWD, Ford’s premier traction-control technology.
Advanced AWD uses a twin-clutch rear-drive unit with differential lock capability to send power to the tires that need it the most. The system can divert the full force of the rear axle to either wheel, so even if you’ve only got one tire on the road, you’ll be off with a bang. Check out the

What’s included

Before you can appreciate the new additions, it helps to know what you’re building on. The base 2023 Ford Maverick XL uses a 162-hp 2.5L FHEV engine. Sitting 8.3 inches off the ground, it’s capable of carrying 1,500 lbs and towing 4,000 lbs with FWD. It features front stabilizer bars, twin-tube hydraulic gas-pressurized shocks, and MacPherson strut-type suspension with coil springs.
After you’ve upgraded to the 250-hp 2.0L Ecoboost engine and advanced AWD, the Ford Maverick Tremor Off-Road Package adds:
  • Heavy-duty transmission cooler and half-shafts
  • Underbody steel skid plates
  • Five additional driving modes (Pavement, Mud, Sand, Snow, and Tow/Haul)
  • Trail Control (a low-speed mode for off-roading that controls torque and speed while you focus on steering)
  • Full-size spare tire
  • Trailer hitch receiver with four-pin connector
  • Tremor Orange tow hooks
  • Blacked-out headlamps, taillamps, Ford logos, fender vent, and grille
  • 17-inch machined-face Tarnished Dark aluminum wheels with Orange painted pockets
  • 235/65R17 All-Terrain tires
  • Black Onyx cloth upholstery with stitched Tremor logos and Orange accents
  • Matching dark center console, register vents, and door handles
You can add more swagger to the Maverick with the Tremor Off-Road Plus Appearance package. Priced at $1,495, it includes a Carbonized Gray hood, roof, lower door graphic, and door handles. Matching mirrors accompany the XLT Luxury Package and Lariat trim. You’ll need the Tremor package before you can add the Appearance pack to your shopping cart.

What it does

True to its name, the Tremor Off-Road Package doesn’t skimp on equipment. Its reinforced (and specially-tuned) suspension can handle big shocks, and with a ground clearance of 9.4 inches and an approach angle of 30.7°, it can clear more obstacles than your average truck.
Unfortunately, the weight of all this added equipment lowers the Maverick’s payload capacity to 1,200 pounds. Its towing capacity remains unchanged—you’ll have to invest in the 4K Tow Package ($745) to raise it.

How much is the 2023 Ford Maverick Tremor Off-Road Package?

The 2023 Tremor Off-Road Package costs $2,995 whether you choose the Maverick XLT or Lariat. However, because it requires an EcoBoost 2.0L engine and Advanced AWD, its total cost is significantly higher.

Is the Tremor Off-Road Package worth it?

Once you factor in the cost of required equipment, the Tremor’s price tag rises from $2,995 to nearly $8,000. That’s more than enough of a difference to make us consider the competition. For your convenience, we’ve rounded up three of the best alternatives to the Tremor Off-Road Package below.

Tremor Off-Road Package vs. FX4 Off-Road Package

The 2023 Ford Maverick FX4 Off-Road Package costs $800, but just like the Tremor, it requires an engine, drive, and trim upgrade for a minimum $30,115 price tag. In return, you get front tow hooks, Hill Descent Control, steel skid plates, a trailer hitch receiver with a four-pin connector, and all-terrain tires. While not as flashy as the Tremor, it decks the Maverick in 17-inch Ebony aluminum wheels and an FX4 Off-Road box decal.
The FX4 package does a great job of sticking to the essentials. It brings some of Ford’s best tech to the table, including five new drive modes (Normal, Mud/Rut, Slippery, Sand, and Tow/Haul), an upgraded engine cooling fan, and a high-capacity radiator. It’s a better fit for folks who require heavy-duty suspension and care more about their truck’s abilities than its appearance.

Tremor Off-Road Package vs. 2023 Ford Ranger Tremor Off-Road Package

If bigger is better in your book, the
Ford Ranger
probably has what you’re looking for. It’s got a larger engine, a larger box, a payload capacity of 1,430 lbs, and a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 lbs. The Tremor package includes a 270-hp 2.3L engine, electronic locking rear differential, FOX dampers, a Terrain Management System, Trail Control, steel bash plates, 17-inch wheels, and the usual complement of black cosmetics.
Be prepared to spend at least $45,005 on the whole setup. It’s a steep price difference, but to Ford’s credit, you get what you pay for. A Ranger with a Tremor package can haul much more than a similarly-equipped Maverick, making it essential for drivers with plenty of cargo.

Tremor Off-Road Package vs. 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz

There isn't much competition in the compact truck market right now, but considering its success, that’s sure to change. Ford and
Hyundai
are neck and neck—Car & Driver gave the ‘23 Maverick a 10/10 and the
Santa Cruz
a 9/10
The Santa Cruz Night ($37,395) features a superb AWD ride, 20-inch dark alloy wheels, a svelte blacked-out appearance, and a turbocharged engine capable of towing 5,000 lbs. Its four-door crew cab and four-foot bed are built on a car platform, lending it more maneuverability and comfort. However, it’s also shorter than the Maverick, with just 8.6 inches of ground clearance.
The two compacts might belong to the same category but they ultimately serve different drivers. The Maverick and Tremor are built for serious off-roaders, while the Santa Cruz caters to road trippers with lots of cargo and little more than a gravel drive separating them from their destination.

The bottom line

The Ford Maverick’s Off-Road Tremor Package puts its money where its mouth is—on a more powerful engine, better traction control, and equipment that’s as tough as the trail ahead. If you couldn’t care less about what your truck looks like, we’d recommend the FX4. Drivers who enjoy advertising their off-road lifestyle will appreciate the Tremor’s balance of performance and pizzazz.
