background
For an additional $800, you can add the FX4 Off-Road Package to an all-wheel drive (AWD) 2023 Ford Maverick XLT or Lariat. It includes off-road-focused features such as all-terrain tires, hill descent control, skid plates, and a trailer hitch receiver.
The 2023 Ford Maverick is one of the
top-rated trucks
on the current market. It’s available with either a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter hybrid engine or a 250-hp 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, but the FX4 Off-Road Package is only available with
Ford’s
non-hybrid engine.
Let’s explore the details of this package so you’re more informed at the dealership.

What is the Ford Maverick FX4 package?

The Ford Maverick FX4 package is an optional equipment package available on certain 2023 Ford Maverick vehicles. It’s available for the XLT or Lariat trims, but only when equipped with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine and AWD. It’s also not available with the Black Appearance Package.

What’s included

The FX4 package includes a fairly extensive list of upgrades considering the price, all focused on making your Maverick more off-road-worthy:
  • 17” unique aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires
  • 6.5” “productivity” instrument cluster screen/off-road instrument cluster screen
  • Exposed front tow hooks
  • Five selectable drive modes
  • Hill descent control
  • Upgraded performance suspension
  • Upgraded engine cooling fan and radiator with increased capacity
  • Skid plates
  • Trailer hitch receiver with four-pin connector
  • FX4 Off-Road decal

What it does

If it’s not already obvious, the FX4 package will make your Maverick better-equipped for off-roading. A/T tires will have you conquering rough terrain, exposed front tow hooks make it easier to get yourself—or a friend—unstuck, and skid plates protect the underside of the vehicle. Just bear in mind that while your all-terrain tires will work like a dream in off-road situations, they won’t perform as well as regular tires on paved roads, and they’ll wear down faster.
The included hill descent control feature on the Ford Maverick FX4 activates with the touch of a button, and automatically keeps your braking and gas under control while you steer down a steep incline.
The off-road screen in the FX4’s instrument cluster allows you to see the ground in front of you through a front facing camera, so you can see hidden obstacles like bumps and protrusions.
Selectable drive modes include Normal, Mud/Rut, Slipper, Sand, and Tow/Haul, all of which are specifically programmed AWD settings to help in various off-road and on-road situations.
And of course, upgraded cooling equipment means that your engine is less likely to overheat and will provide increased performance under more grueling circumstances.

Is the FX4 package worth it?

Considering how much is added for just $800, the FX4 package is definitely worth it if you plan on towing or going off-road with your Ford Maverick. It’s especially worth it when you consider that the FX4 package isn’t included with any higher trim, but you’ll be getting a few features that are added to the Lariat if you get a Maverick XLT FX4.
The cheapest way to get a 2023 Ford Maverick with an FX4 Off-Road package is to buy the XLT trim, and only add AWD and the FX4 package. This will give you a net price of $30,115, according to Ford’s
Build and Price
tool.

FX4 package vs. the Tremor Off-Road package

If you’re looking for even more off-road features, you might want to go for one of the Tremor Off-Road packages, a new addition to the 2023 Maverick lineup. These packages include advanced 4WD, and even more impressive off-road upgrades than the ones included with the FX4 package.
The Tremor Off-road package also includes Trail Control, a smart cruise control system for difficult terrain that takes over the gas, brakes, and transmission, allowing the driver to simply steer as the system optimizes traction. Plus, unlike the FX4 package, the Tremor package is available with the hybrid powertrain.
While the Tremor Off-Road packages are far more impressive than the FX4 package, they do add a significant amount to the price. A regular Tremor Off-Road Package costs $2,995, in addition to the $2,220 cost of the advanced 4WD drivetrain, and if you want the Tremor Off-Road Plus Appearance Package, that adds another $1,495 on top.
Here’s most of what’s included with the all-in Tremor Off-Road Plus Appearance Package:
  • Upgraded off-road suspension
  • Trail Control
  • Skid plates
  • Selectable drive modes
  • Off-road screen
  • Heavy duty transmission cooler
  • 4-pin trailer hitch receiver
  • 17” machine-face tarnished dark aluminum wheels with orange painted pockets and all-terrain tires
  • New front bumper with better approach angle
  • Exterior orange accents
  • Front tow hooks
  • Tremor box decals/badges
  • Black chrome exterior lights
  • Unique interior highlights
  • All-weather floor mats
  • Unique seats
  • Unique instrument panel
  • Power-adjustable driver seat
  • 400W/110 Inverter with cab outlet, rear console USB, and bed outlet

FX4 package vs. the 4K Tow package

If all you’re looking for is some extra towing capability, the 4K Tow Package—also only available with AWD and the non-hybrid engine—might be more your speed. There are no all-terrain tires here, but the upgraded cooling system is included, as well as a 7-pin trailer hitch receiver. The tow package adds only $745 to the price of the truck, and increases max towing capacity to 4,000 pounds.

The bottom line

If you’re looking for an affordable off-road upgrade for a non-hybrid 2023 Ford Maverick, look no further than the FX4 Off-Road package, but if you want a much longer list of extras and increased off-road capability, you might prefer to go for a Maverick with a new Tremor Off-Road Package.
