background
For an extra $4,290, Ford’s Tremor Off-Road package adds an Off-Road tuned suspension, electronic Terrain Management System™, and slick styling accents to your Ford Ranger. If you’re looking to dominate the trails with your Ranger, the Tremor Off-Road package may be just what you need.
  • A raised, off-road tuned suspension, underbody protection, and unique styling features are just a few of the upgrades in the Tremor Off-Road package.
  • Serious off-road adventurers who don’t spend much time highway driving are most likely to see the value in the Tremor Off-Road package.

What is the Ford Ranger Off-Road package?

The Ford Ranger Off-Road package, or Tremor package, is an options bundle available on SuperCrew Ranger XLTs and Lariats outfitted with 4-wheel-drive (4WD)
The package includes both performance and appearance modifications that make your Ranger act and look trail tough. But to get the Tremor package, you’ll have to select the right body style and drivetrain as well as the right additional options packages

What’s included

Let’s start with just the Tremor Off-Road package. Add it, and you’ll get all these goodies:

What it does

When added to your Ranger XLT or Lariat, the Tremor Off-Road package makes hitting the trails safer and more fun—not to mention more stylish and convenient.
Most notably, the Off-Road package adds 0.8 inches to the
Ford Ranger’s ground clearance
, plus the suspension, differentials, traction management systems, and all-terrain tires you’ll need to go where no other Ranger can go. Then, while you’re there, the magnetic wheel arch flares help protect your truck from whatever you might kick up with those nubby tires.
To help keep those tires well-connected to the ground, Ford’s TMS™ includes four selectable drive modes—Normal, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and Sand—that adjust your Ranger’s throttle position, speed, and steering angle to match the terrain you’re driving on. The Tremor package’s added Trail Control™ system regulates your speed, so you can concentrate on the trail ahead.
In addition to all these functional upgrades, you’ll also get the benefit of style and convenience options to make your driving more comfortable both on the road and off.

Is the Off-Road package worth it?

If you’re a true off-road enthusiast who needs that extra 0.8 inches of lift to get over the next rise, then the Tremor Off-Road package makes sense for you. Otherwise, you’re better off choosing the FX4 Off-Road Package. But unless you’re planning to hit some major trails—which, let’s face it, most of us aren’t—you can save a lot of cash by just equipping your Ranger with 4WD and calling it a day.
An added benefit of choosing the FX4 package, or just equipping 4WD is that you don’t have to choose special body styles to do so. Let’s take a closer look at some of the differences between these options.

Tremor Off-Road package vs. FX4 Off-Road package

Put simply, the FX4 Off-Road package equips all the off-road goodies available with the Tremor package (except for the lifted suspension), without adding the styling and convenience features.
The package alone is much cheaper than the Tremor package at only $1,295, and you typically only need to equip 4WD to add the package. That means starting MSRPs for the XLT and Lariat trims with the FX4 package would come out to $36,240 and $40,280 respectively.
The FX4 package is also available on the base
Ranger XL
trim, but you’ll need to equip the $1,135 101A Equipment group and the $995 STX Special Edition Package in addition to 4WD. This will bring the starting MSRP for a Ranger XL FX4 to $33,175.
No matter which option you choose, you’ll still be getting almost all the off-road benefits of the Tremor package for about $2,500 less.

Tremor Off-Road package vs. 4WD

Just leveling up your trims won’t give you any added off-road capability on the Ford Ranger. Even the top-tier Lariat comes with 2WD standard.
Equipping 4WD on your Ranger costs $3,485 regardless of trim, and it’s well worth it if you’ll be doing any driving in snow or other slick or uneven surfaces. For most of us, 4WD is more than enough to get us around. So let’s save the Off-Road packages for the folks who really want to hit the trails.

The bottom line

If you really want to hit the trails, then the Tremor Off-Road package is more than worth it for the Ford Ranger—although the cheaper FX4 package is worth your consideration, too. But if you’re like most of us, and you just want to make sure you can get around when the roads get bad, 4WD is the only option you need.
