Sliding door problems are common on the Dodge Caravan and Dodge Grand Caravan
. We cannot diagnose the problem with certainty, although it could be a broken door actuator or a broken door lock/latching mechanism assembly. Depending on how skilled you are at auto repair, you might try to solve the issue on your own—this would, however, necessitate the removal of the internal panel of the broken sliding door, which can be a hassle.
Instead of summarizing the process here (there is just no way to do so and have it still be relevant), we advise finding some YouTube videos demonstrating how to carry out this procedure.
On the flip side, you could—and should, if you have no automotive expertise—have a mechanic take a look and diagnose/fix the issue. Normally, the repair bill for something like this would cost between $600 and $1,500, depending on which part is at fault.
Fortunately, the 2016-2017 Dodge Grand Caravan has been issued a recall for problems with the sliding door actuator.
Per the recall’s stipulations, the warranty period for the driver and passenger sliding door power lock actuator has been extended to 15 years or 150,000 miles—this means you won’t have to pay out of pocket for the repairs.
Of course, if the problem is not with the actuator, you will still have to pay for the repairs yourself.
