background
Can’t get your 2018 Honda Accord Sport’s trunk to open? The most common cause for the malfunction may not be a malfunction at all—rather, you might have just forgotten to turn off the “valet mode”, a security feature that disables your trunk.
In addition to activating your valet system, there could potentially be several other issues that are preventing you from getting to your trunk. That’s exactly why

What to do if your 2018 Honda Accord Sport trunk won’t open

Is your 2018 Accord Sport’s trunk not opening? If the key fob or trunk latch is giving you issues, try some troubleshooting before heading down to the local Honda dealer.

Most common cause: Valet mode accidentally activated

Your Accord Sport trunk malfunction might actually be one of Honda’s security features working the way it was intended to work!
The 2018 Accord Sport has a valet mode that was designed to disable all system features, including turning the power off to the remote key and truck release. As the name suggests, it's meant for valet parking, but you can also use this security function if you’re loaning out your vehicle to another driver, taking it in for detailing, or just for extra security when you need to step away from your Honda Accord Sport.
And as you might imagine, many Accord drivers simply forget that the valet system is even on! Since it’s out of sight in the glove compartment, it can certainly be out of mind. So if your trunk isn’t opening, the first thing you should do is check to see if your valet mode is on.
All you have to do is open your glove box and find the on/off switch in the upper right-hand corner with a symbol of a car with its trunk popped open. If the valet mode has been activated, then you’ll simply just pull the switch down to off and then try opening your trunk.

Other possible causes

If the valet mode is off, but you’re still having trouble opening your truck, then there might be other issues at play that could include a broken key fob or electrical failure. Here are some other possible causes that are preventing you from opening your trunk:
  • Broken key fob: If you’re able to open the trunk using the switches on the trunk itself or the driver's side door, then there’s a chance your key fob is to blame.
  • Broken latch: Can you hear the actuator working even though the trunk isn’t unlocking? Then you might have a broken trunk latch on your hands.
  • Electrical malfunction: A faulty wiring harness or a blown fuse could be the reason why your trunk isn’t opening properly.
  • Faulty door switch: Your trunk switch or driver’s door switch might be broken if your key fob still opens the trunk.
Are any of these issues ringing a bell? If so, then you’ll want to take your Accord Sport to the service center of your local Honda dealer so they can identify and resolve the issue. A skilled technician can inspect any and all components that might be affecting your trunk not opening, including the electrical system, fuse box, and door locks.

How to manually open a 2018 Honda Accord Sport trunk

Getting your trunk fixed is ideal but what if your mom’s birthday present is stuck in the truck—is there a way to open it this instant?
Thankfully, the answer is yes! And there are actually two ways to go about it. The 2018 Honda Accord Sport features a trunk release button and an emergency trunk release that you can access from inside your sedan.
The easiest option would be to use the trunk release button that’s located on the driver’s door. But if this doesn’t work for you either, you can engage the emergency release. Here’s how:
  • First, separate your key from the key fob then enter the rear of the vehicle.
  • Once you’re in the back seat, look for a square panel that should be on the right side above the seats.
  • Using your key as a tool, pop open the square panel and put your key inside and turn until the trunk opens
Then voila! The trunk on your 2018 Honda Accord Sport should quickly pop up.

Cost of trunk repair for 2018 Honda Accord Sport

Repair costs for your Accord Sport’s trunk will not only depend on the exact issue preventing you from opening your trunk, but your location matters too.
If you need to replace your trunk latch, that could end up costing about $192, but again, the exact cost might be based on where you live. The costs might be similar for a trunk latch release cable replacement or
trunk lock actuator replacement
as well.
Or it could be that you need a
trunk latch adjustment
that could run about $100 or less depending on the repair shop and your location. But if you need to replace the entire trunk lid, let’s say in the event of a car accident, then it might end up costing you well over $500 for
the parts alone
Of course, if you have
comprehensive coverage
and
collision insurance
on your Honda Accord Sport insurance policy, then these plans might help lower your repair costs!
