When did GM buy Saturn?

I remember hearing about the decline of Saturn vehicles in the early 2000s but I never realized that the brand was owned by General Motors. When did GM buy Saturn?

Saturn Corporation
was actually created by General Motors (GM) as a subsidiary in 1985. Which means GM technically never bought Saturn, as they already owned it.
Introduced in 1985, Saturn was GM’s attempt at competing with vehicles imported from Japan, especially when it came to compact cars, which the Japanese automotive industry was known for.
Due to the fact that the brand was so different from GM’s usual vehicles, Saturn operated somewhat independently. However, it still relied on it’s parent company’s resources and brand network to function.
As the years went on and Saturn vehicles became less and less popular, GM would discontinue the brand in 2010, shortly after failing to sell the company to Penske Automotive in 2009.
