What’s the best route from Indiana to Florida?

After this winter, I’m ready to drive south for some Florida sunshine. I know it’s going to be a long ride from Indianapolis, but I’m too scared to fly. What’s the best route from Indiana to Florida? Maybe the Orlando area?

With winter lows in the 20s and 30s,
Indianapolis
is definitely a city you might need a vacation from every now and then. Totally understand you there!
Assuming that you’re aiming for that action-packed
Orlando
area, the best route from
Indiana
to
Florida
is as follows:
  • Take I-65 S out of Indianapolis, through
    Louisville
    , and into
    Nashville
  • Pick up I-24 E in Nashville and transfer to I-75 S in
    Chattanooga
  • Continue on I-75 S through
    Atlanta
    , and into Florida
  • Get on Florida’s Turnpike in Sumter County
  • Take the Turnpike east into Gotha, FL, then get on the Spessard L. Holland East West Expressway (FL-408 E)
  • Continue on the Expressway into Orlando
If, like Johnny Cash, you’re wary of I-24 E (or even the traffic congestion on I-65 S), you can also pick up I-74 E out of Indianapolis, then transfer to I-75 S in
Cincinnati
and ride it all the way down to Florida’s Turnpike.
Depending on traffic and the route you choose to take, your total travel time will come to around 15 hours. You should only drive a max of about 8-9 hours a day, so it’s safest to break that trip up into at least two days. Your halfway point in terms of cities would be around Chattanooga, TN, but if you’d rather book a hotel in a smaller town,
Calhoun, GA
is a solid choice.
No matter what route you decide to drive, you’ll want to protect yourself on your travels with quality car insurance.
