2008 Ford Edge oil capacity

The 2008 Ford Edge sports a potent V6 engine that has an oil capacity of 5.5 quarts, or approximately 5.2 liters. Be sure to maintain the oil at this level to ensure proper and consistent performance.

What kind of oil does a 2008 Ford Edge need?

The recommended type of oil for a 2008 Ford Edge is SAE 5W-20 Fully Synthetic Motor Oil. When this is not possible (as in emergencies), it is permissible to use SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, though this is not recommended for continuous use.
But what does SAE 5W-20 mean? The numbers contain information about the engine oil itself. The “W” stands for “Winter” and tells us how the oil will behave during a cold start. The numbers before the W represent the viscosity (thickness) of the oil at low temperatures—lower numbers mean the oil will flow more easily.
The number after the W describes the thickness of the oil at the engine’s normal operating temperature, which is very hot.
“SAE” stands for the “Society of Automotive Engineers,” who are the people that set up this numerical code system.
So, the oil that Ford has recommended will perform well in cold weather conditions, and the low viscosity will ensure less deterioration over time in your engine. “Synthetic” essentially means that the chemical compounds in the oil are artificially made.
Here are some specific options for you to check out:

How often to change oil on a 2008 Ford Edge

If you’re using fully synthetic oil, you can wait to change your Ford’s oil between every 7,500 and 10,000 miles. Even so, you should stick to the low end of the range or change the oil every six months (whichever comes first) if you drive regularly in special conditions, such as dusty conditions and unpaved roads or off-road driving.
On top of scheduled maintenance, you should also be checking your engine oil every month—both the appearance and its oil level. Here are a few signs your engine oil needs to be changed:
  • Your check engine oil light is on
  • The oil is dark brown or black or looks dirty
  • A noticeable drop in fuel efficiency
  • Consistently stalling or overheating engine

How to change your oil and oil filter

Here are the materials you’ll need to change your oil at home:
  • Oil-filter removal wrench
  • Socket wrench to remove the drain plug
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel
  • Gloves
  • Your chosen engine oil
Here are the steps you should be following:
  • Park in a level area. Run your engine for about five minutes to make sure it reaches normal operating temperature, then turn it off.
  • Locate the oil drain plug underneath your Ford Edge. Secure the rear wheels or jack up your car if necessary.
  • Situate the drain pan beneath the oil drain plug. Pull out the drain plug, drain the oil onto the drain pan, and replace the plug.
  • Locate your oil filter. Position your drain pan beneath it and remove the filter—more oil will come out.
  • Add oil to the new oil filter and insert it.
  • Remove your oil fill cap (in the engine compartment) and pour in the new engine oil.
  • Replace the cap. Then, run your engine for a few minutes to check for any leaks.
You can make sure you haven’t over- or underfilled your engine oil by using a dipstick to check the oil level. If you’ve overfilled by accident, an authorized dealer can remove some of the oil.
Any service lights relating to your engine oil should turn off if you’ve done everything correctly.
