What should you do if you hit a cat while driving?

As I was driving down the street the other day a cat started to cross the road. Luckily I braked and the cat ran off, but I was left wondering what I would’ve done if things had gone differently. What should you do if you hit a cat while driving?

Phew, that was a close call! I’m glad you’re both safe.
You should check your
state’s driver handbook
for laws explaining how to handle animal collisions.
After using state laws as your guide, here are the steps you should take if you hit a cat while driving:
  • Don’t panic. Turn on your hazard lights and calmly pull to the side of the road.
  • Call 911 immediately.
  • If legal and necessary, gently wrap the cat in a coat or blanket and move it off the road (when it is safe to do so). You can also focus your headlights onto the cat to alert other drivers.
  • Check to see if the cat is wearing a tag and notify the owner. If there are no tags you can ask around the area whether anyone knows the cat’s owner.
  • Once the police arrive, you should file a report so you can
    claim vehicle damage
