Tesla will soon start selling its 4680 battery cells in its
Model Y
, which will offer 279 miles of range. While Tesla is rolling out Model Y’s to its employees, the electric carmaker expects to start mass-producing the new lithium-ion batteries by March 2024.
What’s so great about the new 4680 battery cells? These new batteries are reportedly twice as large as Tesla’s current batteries but boost five times more capacity. In time, this will allow Tesla to improve the range of its models, reportedly by about 15%, while potentially using fewer batteries over the life of a Tesla, thereby cutting costs in the process. Japanese electronics maker Panasonic will be producing the new batteries for Tesla, aiming to improve their overall efficiency due to their lighter weight and reduced complexity.
The Model Y SUVs with the new 4680 batteries also feature a few new goodies—a magnetic center armrest as well as a parcel shelf. The all-wheel-drive Model Y will still have a starting price of $59,990 even with the new battery.
