What is the best way to avoid deer on the road?

I live in West Virginia. There are lots of rural roads here, so hitting deer is a pretty common thing—especially in the fall. How can I prevent deer-car collisions?

“We feel for you! It can be tricky to safely navigate rural areas when driving, especially areas prone to animal-related accidents.
Here are some of the best ways to avoid deer on the road:
  • Refrain from driving at dusk and dawn. Deer are typically on the move searching for food during these hours.
  • Be vigilant from October to January. Deer are mating during these months and are therefore more active.
  • Use your headlights, especially in areas with low visibility. This will allow you to see the deer and vice versa.
  • Honk and brake if you see a deer to alert them and allow time for them to run away.
Even by taking these precautions, it’s still possible to hit a deer. As a West Virginian, it would be best to add
comprehensive coverage
to your insurance policy, which covers animal-related accidents.
