What is inattentive driving?

A friend of mine has a bad habit of multitasking while driving—eating a snack, checking her calendar, I think I even saw her pluck a few nose hairs once. I want her to stop but don’t know how to word it right. What does inattention mean while driving?

Yikes—I’ve seen a lot of interesting behavior on the road, but plucking nose hairs is a new one.
Inattentive driving is failure to stay focused on the road while driving. The correct amount of attention required will depend on the situation. But as a rule of thumb, you should eliminate all other distractions and just drive.
Some common forms of inattentive driving include:
  • Eating
  • Talking
  • Tending to children
  • Using electronic devices
Inattentive driving isn’t just dangerous; it can also be costly. As of 2019, 21 states have laws against distracted drivers—with fines reaching up to $500 for a single ticket. Furthermore, an accident caused by distracted driving can also have a huge impact on your car insurance rates.
