Small in size but big in economy, these fun-sized cars took a bumpy path to become the vehicles they are today. They had always been more popular in Europe than in the U.S.
But when they arrived, we were introduced to the gasoline models. Although gas-powered, the Smart car was fuel efficient, environmentally responsible, and easy to park.
However, they were still flawed. With minimum range availability and the global push toward zero-emission driving, Smart cars with gas engines were discontinued in 2017 and replaced by Smart car EVs for the 2018 model year.
