Is it illegal to steal a street sign?

How much trouble would I get into for stealing a street sign in Illinois? I really love the way that they look as decor and the road sign for my street would be a perfect addition to my wall, but I don’t want to go to jail over it.

Unfortunately for your decorating plans, it is illegal to steal street signs in
Illinois
and all other states in the US. In most cases, you’ll be charged with a misdemeanor if you’re caught in the act, meaning you’ll have to pay a fine and spend up to a year in jail. This is because street signs are crucial to maintaining an orderly flow of traffic, and removing them unexpectedly might cause an accident.
But that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost! There are plenty of websites—like roadtrafficsign.com and safetysign.com—that allow you to create a custom street sign to hang on your wall. That way, you can pick out the perfect street name for your wall without any scrapes with the law.
While you’re sprucing up your wall, why not spruce up your insurance policy too? It’s easy when you download the
