With a fair market value starting around $80,000, the 2020 BMW 8 Series Convertible delivers a relatively new luxury vehicle with plenty of standard features and the sophisticated style that BMW is known for
The BMW 8 Series returned in 2019 after a hiatus of over 20 years. Based on the 5 Series, the 8 Series Convertible drives into the vacated spot left by the departing 6 Series—however, the new 8 Series model extends a few inches longer and wider than its predecessor. With an optional four-door Gran Coupe, the 8 Series can fit any lifestyle.
But we’re here to talk about the 8 Series Convertible! Let

Luxury with the top down: the 2020 BMW 8 Series Convertible

There’s no doubt about it—BMW’s cars are known for their luxury, and the 2020 8 Series Convertible is no exception. Anyone who gets into the leather-upholstered interior of an 8 Series Convertible knows that they’re in for a sophisticated ride.
Performance-wise, the 8 Series is no slouch either—with the base twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, the Convertible gets 335 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque. A 523-hp twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with 553 pound-feet of torque is an option for drivers who want a bit of extra power under the hood. The 8 Series Convertible has a face-stretching 0 to 60 time of 3.6 to 4.7 seconds, depending on your engine and trim.
As fuel costs rise, it’s also a good idea to check out how fuel efficient a car is. Here are the EPA ratings for the 8 Series by trim:
  • 840i: 22 city mpg/29 highway mpg
  • 840i xDrive: 20 city mpg/27 highway mpg
  • M850i xDrive: 17 city mpg/25 highway mpg
Now that we have an idea of what the 8 Series Convertible has to offer, let’s see how it measures up in terms of comfort, reliability, and safety.

Is the 2020 BMW 8 Series Convertible comfortable?

When it comes to interior quality, the 8 Series lives up to what you would expect from a BMW. Standard leather upholstery, attractive trim designs, and an elegant atmosphere all add up to one classy ride.
For the driver and front-row passenger, comfort is the name of the game. Roomy and equipped with heated and power-adjustable seats—and optional ventilated seating as well—the front row is comfortable no matter how long the trip.
The back row, however, is another story. While adults will find the rear row of the Gran Coupe comfortable for short trips, accessing the second row in the Convertible is a chore. Once your passengers make it into the back seat, they’ll find it quite cramped for comfort. However, you can spruce up the back with optional heated rear seats.
Speaking of cramped, the 8 Series Convertible comes with 12.4 cubic feet of trunk space. That’s about average for convertibles, but it probably won’t be enough to pack in your golf clubs and your kid’s hockey equipment at the same time.

Is the 2020 BMW 8 Series Convertible reliable?

Expert ratings from J.D. Power and Consumer Reports for the BMW 8 Series. However, BMWs generally rank on the lower end when it comes to reliability. Part of this is due to the high maintenance costs for maintaining a luxury vehicle—especially one that’s a couple of years out of date.
As long as you keep up with a
basic car maintenance schedule
and put aside a little extra for repairs, your 8 Series Convertible should treat you well. Sticking to a lower trim level or passing on the upgraded engine could help reduce your maintenance costs.

Is the 2020 BMW 8 Series Convertible safe?

Overall, BMW has very good safety ratings, with many BMW models scoring 5/5. The 8 Series Convertible doesn’t currently have a
rating from the NHTSA
or the IIHS, but it does have a solid suite of standard driver assistance features:
  • Forward collision warning
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Daytime pedestrian detection
  • Rearview camera
  • Adaptive headlights
  • Head-up display
For added peace of mind you can opt for these additional safety features as well:
  • Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Side collision avoidance
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Surround-view parking camera system
  • Drive recorder
  • Night vision with pedestrian detection
  • Driver fatigue and focus monitoring
  • Automatic post-collision braking
  • Automatic high-beam headlights

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
