Is I-94 a toll road in Illinois?

I’m from southern Illinois, and I’m taking a road trip from Springfield to Milwaukee. I’ve never driven this route before, so I want to plan ahead and avoid toll roads if I can. Is the I-94 stretch through Illinois a toll road?

The entire stretch of I-94 is a toll road in Illinois, although it also includes dual-named stretches of I-294 and I-80. While you can avoid the toll by taking city streets and other alternative roads, it’s by far the fastest way to get to Milwaukee from Springfield, Illinois. The toll varies depending on where you enter the roadway, but it’s only between $0.90 and $2.80.
If you want to avoid the toll altogether, you can always follow these directions to Milwaukee:
  1. Take I-55 North to Bloomington-Normal.
  2. Merge onto I-39 North.
  3. Merge onto I-90 West near Rockford.
  4. Hop onto I-43 North all the way into Milwaukee.
