How much oil should come out during an oil change?

I’m going to try changing my own oil for the first time, and I’m not sure how big of a drain pan I should use. How much oil should come out during an oil change?

How much oil should come out during an oil change depends on your vehicle’s oil capacity; for most cars, that will be four to five quarts.
You can find your engine’s oil capacity by checking your owner’s manual. You might not end up with quite that amount once the old oil’s drained, but whatever the answer is, you’ll want to use a drain pan that can hold at least that much liquid.
