2016 Ram 1500 5.7 engine oil capacity

Before you
change the oil and filter
in your truck, you’re going to need to figure out how much oil your Ram 1500 needs. In general, the 2016 Ram 1500 5.7’s engine oil capacity is 7 quarts, or about 6.6 liters
Don’t confuse this number with your Ram’s engine displacement—which refers to the volume that your engine’s cylinders take up. Oil capacity tells you how much engine oil your vehicle needs to operate. These numbers are not interchangeable, so don’t get them mixed up.

What kind of oil does a 2016 Ram 1500 5.7 need?

With an idea of how much oil your engine needs, you also need to know what type of oil to purchase. Don’t just pick up the first bottle of engine oil you see on the shelves!
Ram recommends that 1500 drivers use 5W-20 motor oil. It's up to you whether you use a synthetic or conventional oil.
These numbers might be confusing if you don’t know what they mean. The 5 tells you that the oil has a lower viscosity (thickness) at 0°F, while the 20 refers to its thinner consistency at the vehicle’s normal operating temperature of 212°F. The W tells you that it works well in colder temperatures during the winter months.
Essentially, this type of engine oil works well in colder conditions and causes less wear and tear to your engine

How often to change oil on a 2016 Ram 1500 5.7

You’re also going to need to be able to recognize when it’s time to change your oil, and perhaps the simplest way is sticking to a
basic car maintenance schedule
.
Ram recommends that you change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles if your vehicle is using conventional oil. If you’re using synthetic oil, you can get away with changing your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
However, this value can change depending on your driving habits—like if you drive often or in extreme temperatures. A better benchmark might be to check your oil after every other refuel and check for the following signs that your oil needs to be changed:
  • Dirty motor oil: Motor oil that is darker in color (dark brown/black) or gritty in texture is a sign that your oil has collected a ton of debris
  • Strange noises: Your engine might be knocking, which can be extremely damaging in the long run
  • Weird smells: Smells like oil, smoke, or burning can tell you that your oil needs to be changed
  • Overall decrease in performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

And now you’re ready to change your Ram’s oil! Gather the following materials:
  • A socket wrench
  • A drain pan
  • A filter wrench designed to remove the old oil filter
  • A replacement filter
  • Seven quarts of premium 5W-20 engine oil
Once you have everything ready, follow these steps:
  • Run your engine to warm your vehicle up (this should take five minutes in normal temperatures)
  • Turn the engine off, and pop the hood open
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Remove the oil drain bolt and washer, which should be under the engine
  • Drain the old oil into the drain pan
  • Remove the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
  • Install the new filter
  • Replace the oil drain bolt using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
  • Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Your dipstick can let you know when you’ve added the right amount of oil to the engine. Check for leaks and run your engine—the
oil pressure light
should turn off if you’ve completed a successful oil change.
Finally, don’t just leave all the oil on the floor—make sure you clean everything up. Place it in a sealed container and bring it to a local recycling center.
