Honda Civic engine oil capacity

Before you start draining out your old oil, you need to determine how much oil your Honda Civic needs. Your Honda Civic’s engine oil capacity is 5 quarts
Make sure not to confuse this number with your Civic’s
engine displacement
, which is the 2.0L or 1.5L number listed with your car’s model. Engine displacement tells you how much space the cylinders take up, whereas the oil capacity indicates how much oil the engine needs.

What kind of oil does a Honda Civic need?

It can get confusing when you’re choosing a motor oil, especially when there are so many different options. You’ll need to stick with Honda’s recommendation of 0W-20 motor oil
Why is it so important to use 0W-20 motor oil? This particular grade flows easily at cold temperatures and your Civic’s normal operating temperature to keep your car parts properly lubricated.

How often to change oil on a Honda Civic

If you’re looking to do your own oil changes, you’ll need to recognize signs that your vehicle needs one.
Honda recommends that you change your Civic’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. But that can get a little confusing—especially since that’s such a large range. It’s often helpful to check on your engine after every other refuel for the following signs:
  • Dirty motor oil: Motor oil should be light in color, and if you notice it getting darker and coarser, you should change it
  • Strange sounds: Screeching, etc.
  • Bad smells: Smoke or burning smells
  • Performance issues: Decreased fuel economy, engine sputtering, etc.

How to change your oil and oil filter

If you’ve decided that your Honda Civic needs an oil change, get the following tools ready: a socket wrench, drain pan, filter wrench, new filter, and 0W-20 motor oil.
Before doing anything, get your Civic ready by starting the engine and running the car for a couple of minutes. Once you’ve reached normal operating temperature, you can turn it off and pop the hood.
Then, follow these steps:
  • Remove the oil fill cap and screw off the oil drain bolt and washer. Have your drain pan ready to catch the old oil, as it will start pouring out
  • Replace the old filter with a new one
  • Screw the oil drain bolt and washer back on, and fill up the engine with oil
  • Use the dipstick as an indicator of when you’ve added enough oil
  • Check for leaks by running the engine again
  • Dispose of your waste by bringing the old oil sealed in a container to a recycling center or participating auto shop
Notice that your
oil pressure light
has turned off? That’s a sign that you’ve succeeded!
